For over ten years, the Village Historique Acadien (VHA) has been touring the schools of New Brunswick during Heritage Week which is observed in February. This tour is in keeping with the mission of the VHA, which is to promote and make Acadian heritage and culture accessible.
Interpreters in period costumes visit schoolchildren with trunks filled with accessories and stories about our ancestors. Youngsters will have an opportunity to relive the customs and beliefs of yesteryear, in the classroom.
This program, both entertaining and educational, is offered from kindergarten to grade 8 and answers the respective needs of each age group. The youngest will learn how to make rugs whereas 7th and 8th will hear about the first Acadian settlers.
These sessions differ from conventional history classes by their visual support and the energy of the interpreters who know how to capture kids' attention.
